Roller Derby 101 — Rules, Gear & How to Get Started
So you’ve heard the rumble of wheels, seen the walls form, and thought, “Yep, I want in.” This guide gives you the basics—how the game works, what gear you need, where to find a league, and how to train without feeling overwhelmed.
What Is Roller Derby?
Roller derby is a full-contact sport played on quad skates, usually on a flat track, with two teams of five skaters on the track per jam. It’s fast, strategic, and a little chaotic (in the best way).
Quick history:
-
1930s: Banked-track derby as spectacle
-
Early 2000s: Flat-track revival led by grassroots leagues
-
Today: Thousands of leagues worldwide (WFTDA, MRDA)
How a Bout Works
-
Game format: Two 30-minute halves
-
Jams: Up to 2 minutes each
-
Lineup: 1 jammer, 3 blockers, 1 pivot
Who’s Who
-
Jammer: Scores by legally lapping opponents (star cover)
-
Blockers: Play offense and defense simultaneously
-
Pivot: Stripe cover; can receive the star in a star pass
